Canada’s Housing Crisis
The Right to Housing is a protected Human Right. So why are many provinces failing to act? The only province in Canada that can actually legislate on Housing as a Right is Prince Edward Island, in its Tenancies Act. However, there is no method of enforcement, which seems to be an ongoing issue. The other important issue is what to do in the meantime; how do municipalities and provinces deal with encampments? The current way is to treat the encampments, and the people who are living there are by police enforcement; this is dehumanizing, and other solutions should be found. The Canadian Human Rights Council has some interesting ideas from the Federal Housing Advocate.
